face: The Jain couple, who are related to business in Gujarat, have adopted monkhood by donating their property worth about Rs 200 crores, and are now going to set out on a journey for salvation. Bhavesh Bhandari and his wife had donated all their property in a function in February itself. At the end of April, he officially announced that he would now retire.
The 19-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son of a construction businessman from Himmatnagar in Gujarat state had adopted sannyasa in the year 2022. Some of his acquaintances told that Bhavesh and his wife were inspired by their children to give up their material attachments and take up Sannyasa.
After the couple takes the vow of sannyasa on April 22, the couple will have to break all their family ties. They will not be allowed to keep any ‘materialistic thing’. Then they will walk barefoot across India and survive only on alms.
They will be allowed to have only two white clothes, a bowl for alms and a “rajoharan” (attainment of rajoharan in Jainism means the guru’s consent to sannyasa). He will have a white broom which Jain monks use to remove insects from an area before sitting. It symbolizes the path of non-violence, which is followed by the people of this community.
The Bhandari couple, along with 35 other people, took out a procession for four kilometers and donated all their property, including their mobile phones and air conditioners. In the video of the procession, the couple is seen riding on a chariot, dressed like the royal family. In Jainism, taking ‘Diksha’ is an important commitment, where people have to give up material comforts and survive on alms. They have to roam barefoot across the country.
Last year, a millionaire diamond merchant and his wife in Gujarat took similar ‘initiation’ of their 12-year-old son, five years after he became a Jain monk. His son rode a Ferrari car in his graduation ceremony. While there, the couple rode a Jaguar for their initiation.
