New Delhi: Of the total 1,352 candidates in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections, only 9 percent are women, while 18 percent of the candidates have criminal cases registered against them. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has given this information in a new report. According to analysis by ADR and The National Election Watch, seven of the candidates in the third phase have reported previous convictions. In the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections, voting is scheduled to take place on May 7.
244 candidates with criminal records
According to the ADR report, out of 244 candidates with criminal records, 5 have charges related to murder, while 24 have cases registered against them for attempt to murder. Apart from this, cases are registered against 38 candidates for being involved in crimes against women and 17 for giving hate speeches. The report, based on an analysis of election affidavits of a total of 1,352 candidates, highlights their tendency to indulge in criminal activities and accumulate wealth. The prevalence of criminal cases also varies significantly among the major political parties. There is considerable variation in the number of criminal cases registered against candidates from major political parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP).

The report also highlighted the disparity in the financial backgrounds of the candidates. It revealed that 29 per cent or 392 candidates are “crorepatis” and the average wealth per candidate is Rs 5.66 crore. The top three candidates in terms of declared assets have assets worth crores of rupees, with the highest declared assets worth over Rs 1,361 crore. After filing nomination papers and affidavit, the Congress candidate from Indore withdrew his nomination.
123 women candidates in the third phase
The ADR analysis also highlights the educational and demographic background of the candidates. According to its report, 47 per cent or 639 candidates have educational qualification from class five to class 12, while 44 per cent or 591 candidates are graduates or have higher educational qualification. In terms of age, 30 per cent or 411 candidates are in the 25-40 years category while 53 per cent or 712 candidates are between 41 to 60 years. The report also highlights gender disparity in candidate selection, with only 123 women (nine percent) contesting in the third phase. (input language)
