Jalpaiguri (West Bengal). Four people died and more than 100 were injured after a ‘sudden’ storm hit parts of Jalpaiguri district in the northern part of West Bengal. Officials said many huts and houses were damaged, trees were uprooted and electric poles were lashed by strong winds accompanied by hailstorm in most parts of the district headquarters town and many areas of neighboring Mainaguri. He said that due to the storm, Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga and Saptibari have been most affected and crops grown in several acres of area have been damaged.
Officials said the deceased were identified as Dijendra Narayan Sarkar (52), Anima Burman (45), Jagan Roy (72) and Samar Roy (64). Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the people affected by the storm in Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri areas of West Bengal. A senior official of Jalpaiguri district said that ‘many pedestrians were injured due to hailstorm. Disaster response teams have been deployed and help booths have been set up. Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy told PTI that many people have been admitted to the hospital in injured condition.
Sources associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has canceled her scheduled programs and will go to Jalpaiguri on Sunday. Raj Bhavan officials said that Governor CV Anand Bose will also leave for Jalpaiguri on Monday to visit the affected areas. He said that an emergency cell has been set up at Raj Bhavan to deal with the situation in Jalpaiguri. Banerjee said that civil administration, police and disaster management personnel have been deployed for relief work.

The Chief Minister posted on social media platform It happened, trees and electric poles were uprooted. He said that ‘the district administration will provide compensation to the family members and injured in case of death as per the rules and following the MCC (Model Code of Conduct).’ According to an official statement, Governor Bose is in touch with the Disaster Management Authority in Delhi. He has requested to send more material and manpower to Jalpaiguri.
