Indian Cricket Team: India got independence from the British on 15 August 1947. This independence was achieved after a long struggle and the sacrifices of the martyrs. Then India stood on its own feet and progressed in every field. India has also registered its name on the world stage in the world of sports. After winning the ODI World Cup 1983 title under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, cricket has become famous in every household in India. Today cricket is considered a religion in India. India has given the world superstar players like Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who have proved their mettle on every field. But four years ago today, on 15 August 2020, India’s charismatic captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and dashing batsman Suresh Raina retired.
Dhoni took shocking decisions
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is counted among the best captains in the world. With his calm mind and explosive batting, he led Team India to victory in many matches. As long as Dhoni was on the crease, Indian fans were sure of victory. Under his captaincy, the Indian team defeated Pakistan by 5 runs in the final of the T20 World Cup 2007. In the final, Dhoni gave the last over to Joginder Sharma, which proved to be very effective and Team India won the match easily. Dhoni has always been known for taking out-of-the-box decisions. Under his captaincy, Team India got star players like Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja. He has scored 17092 runs in 535 international matches for India.
India won the ODI World Cup 2011 title by defeating Sri Lanka. At one point, Team India lost the wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli early. Gautam Gambhir was batting well at the crease. In such a situation, everyone expected that Yuvraj Singh would come to the field to support him. But then Dhoni took a surprising decision and came to bat at number five. He played a stormy innings of 91 runs in the final and became the Player of the Match. After this, under his captaincy, Team India won the Champions Trophy 2013 title.
First player to score a century in all three formats
Suresh Raina also retired from cricket on 15 August 2020. He has been a member of India’s ODI World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013 winning team. He has been known for his excellent spin bowling. Raina has pulled Team India out of difficult situations on the basis of his short but important innings in the ODI World Cup 2011. He has scored a total of 7988 runs in 322 international matches for India. He is the first player to score a century in all three formats for India.
