Bhubaneswar: Amidst the Lok Sabha elections being held across the country, voting is also going on for the assembly elections in Odisha. Voting is being held on 147 seats in Odisha. In this election environment, a total of 412 ‘crorepati’ candidates are in the fray in the assembly elections. ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR) and ‘Odisha Election Watch’ analyzed the election affidavits of 1283 out of 1285 candidates.
Average assets of candidates is Rs 2.89 crore
In its report, ADR said that 412 (32 per cent) out of 1283 candidates are crorepatis, while 304 (27 per cent) out of 1121 candidates contesting in the 2019 assembly elections were crorepatis. It said 128 candidates of the ruling BJD, 96 candidates of the BJP, 88 candidates of the Congress and 11 candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. The average assets of candidates contesting the current assembly elections is Rs 2.89 crore, while the average assets of candidates who contested in 2019 was Rs 1.69 crore.
BJP leader Dilip Ray is the richest candidate
According to the report, former coal minister Dilip Ray is the richest candidate in the Odisha assembly elections. Dilip, who is contesting on a BJP ticket from Rourkela assembly seat, has declared total assets worth Rs 313.53 crore. After this, BJD candidate Sanatan Mahakud from Champua constituency is at second place, who has declared assets worth Rs 227.67 crore. At the third place is BJD candidate Subasini Jena from Basta assembly constituency, who has declared movable and immovable assets worth Rs 135.17 crore. According to the report, 5 candidates contesting for the assembly elections in Odisha have declared 0 assets in their affidavits.
Criminal cases are registered against 1283 candidates
Apart from this, this time 348 (27 percent) out of 1283 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Whereas in the 2019 Odisha Assembly elections, 332 (30 percent) out of 1121 candidates had declared criminal cases against themselves. In this assembly election, there are 292 such candidates against whom serious criminal cases are pending. Similarly, 566 candidates have declared their educational qualification between 5th to 12th, while the educational qualification of 652 candidates is graduation or above. (input language)
