New Delhi. Kolkata Knight Riders started IPL 2024 with a win by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 4 runs in a thrilling match. After the brilliance of star all-rounder Andre Russell and opener Phil Salt, KKR snatched the victory from the jaws of Sunrisers Hyderabad with the killer bowling of Harshit Rana in the last over. Hyderabad needed 13 runs in the last over to win but in this match which crossed all limits of thrill, Harshit gave 8 runs in his over. With this win, KKR opened its account in the points table. Russell hit fifty in 20 balls, while wicketkeeper Phil Salt, who remained unsold in the auction, received a lot of applause by hitting 3 consecutive sixes. Salt has been added to the team by KKR as a replacement for Jason Roy, who proved his usefulness in his very first match of the season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad team, which came to chase the target of 209 runs, could score 204 runs for 7 wickets. For Hyderabad, Heinrich Klaasen scored 63 runs in 29 balls while Shahbaz Ahmed scored 16 runs in 5 balls. Openers Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma scored equal 32 runs. KKR scored 208 runs for 7 wickets
Earlier, thanks to Andre Russell’s unbeaten 64 in 25 balls after a restrained half-century by wicketkeeper batsman Phil Salt (54 runs), KKR recovered from a slow start and scored 208 runs for 7 wickets. Salt (40 balls) was not sold in the IPL auction but he was included in the team in place of Jason Roy. After being invited to bat, he continued to play patiently after the initial shock and scored his third fifty in IPL in just 38 balls, but as soon as he tried to score runs quickly in the end, Mayank Markandey (2 wickets for 39 runs) Became a victim.

Russell and Rinku Singh made a partnership of 81 runs in 33 balls due to which KKR added 85 runs in the last five overs. Left arm bowler T Natarajan sent both Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer to the pavilion. Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar kept KKR inside the powerplay by giving just 16 runs in four overs. Bhuvneshwar bowled brilliantly in the initial over and gave only three runs. World number two T20 batsman Salt opened his arms by hitting three consecutive sixes on Marco Jansen. But Narine lost his wicket by mistake, after which Cummins introduced Natarajan who took the wickets of Venkatesh and Iyer. Markandey made Nitish Rana his victim with a googly, due to which KKR’s score was 51 runs for four wickets in eight overs.
Salt and Ramandeep made a partnership of 54 runs
Phil Salt kept scoring runs patiently and he got good support from Ramandeep. Both played a partnership of 54 runs. Ramandeep hit a six after hitting a boundary on Cummins. Ramandeep hit three sixes on Markandey, Yansen and Shahbaz Ahmed. After this, Russell and Rinku increased the run pace and took KKR to 200 runs.
