New Delhi. It is the dream of any all-rounder to score a century in the same Test and take 5 wickets in an innings. In the nearly 147-year history of Test cricket, England’s Ian Botham has done this feat maximum 5 times while India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has done it thrice. A special achievement in this category is scoring 50+, 150+ runs and taking 5 wickets in the same test, which till now only two all-rounders have been able to achieve in test cricket. The special thing is that both of them are from India and Kapil Dev, who is considered the best all-rounder of the country so far, is not included in it. The Indian team had to face defeat in both the two Tests in which India’s Vinoo Mankad and Pauly Umrigar had accomplished this feat.
India’s Mulvantrai Himmatlal Mankad alias Vinoo Mankad did this special feat in the 1952 Lord’s Test against England and Polly Umrigar in the 1962 Port of Spain Test against the West Indies.

Vinu scored 72 runs in the first innings, 184 runs in the second innings.
In the Test between India and England held at Lord’s between 19 and 24 June 1952, India scored 235 runs in the first innings and 378 runs in the second innings. Vinoo Mankad’s contribution in this score was 72 runs in the first innings and 184 runs in the second innings. In reply to India’s first innings score of 235 runs, England’s first innings ended at 537 runs in which Vinoo took 5 wickets for 196 runs in 73 overs. In the match, England had a target of 77 runs, which the team achieved by losing two wickets.
Talking about Vinoo Mankad, apart from being a right-handed batsman, he also used to bowl leg spin with his left hand. He has also opened the Indian batting in many matches. This cricketer, who played 44 Tests for India, scored 2109 runs (five centuries including two triple centuries) at an average of 31.47 and took 162 wickets at an average of 32.32 (5 wickets in 8 innings and 10 wickets in the match twice). .

In the Test held in Port of Spain between 4 and 9 April in 1962, West Indies scored 444 runs for 9 wickets (innings declared) in the first innings. For India, Umrigar took 5 wickets for 107 runs in 56 overs. In response to India’s 444 runs, India’s first innings was reduced to 197 runs in which Pauly’s contribution was 56 runs. While playing follow-on in the match, India had scored 422 runs in the second innings in which Pauly had contributed an unbeaten 172 runs. To win, the Indian team had a target of 176 runs, which it achieved by losing three wickets. Pauly played 59 Tests for India and scored 3631 runs (12 centuries, including one double century) at an average of 42.22 and took 35 wickets at an average of 42.08 (5 wickets in an innings twice).

Botham had missed making this record by a thin margin
England’s Ian Botham had narrowly missed achieving the feat of 50 and 150 runs and five wickets in the same Test. One of the finest all-rounders in world cricket, Botham scored 50 runs in the first innings and 149 not out in the second innings and took 6 wickets for 95 runs in the Headingley Test against Australia in 1981. He missed reaching the 150-run mark in the second innings by one run.

Only 3 players could do the feat of a century and 10 wickets in the same test.
As far as scoring a century and taking 10 wickets in the same Test is concerned, till now only three players have been able to do so. England’s Ian Botham first did this in the Bombay (now Mumbai) Test against India in 1980. Apart from scoring a century (114 runs) in the first innings, he took 13 wickets in the match (six in the first innings and seven in the second). Pakistan’s Imran Khan, apart from scoring 117 runs in the first innings in the Faisalabad Test against India in 1983, took 11 wickets in the match (6 in the first innings and five in the second). Similarly, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, apart from scoring 137 runs in the first innings of the Khulna Test against Zimbabwe in 2014, took 10 wickets (five each in both the innings) in the match.
