All About Diabetic Neuropathy: Diabetes is a very serious disease and is spreading like an epidemic all over the world. There are more than 10 crore diabetes patients in India and about 15 crore people are at risk of this disease. If we look at the statistics, diabetes is wreaking havoc on a large population of the country. When people have diabetes, their blood sugar level rises rapidly and they have to take medicines and insulin to control it. Diabetes may sound like a simple disease, but it weakens the body very fast.
Dr Sonia Rawat, Director, Preventive Health Department, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi, told AnyTV Diabetes patients should try their best to control blood sugar, because if blood sugar remains uncontrolled for a long time, it starts attacking the nervous system of the body. Uncontrolled blood sugar starts damaging the nerves of the body parts, which is called diabetic neuropathy in medical terms. This is a serious condition, which can increase the risk of death of diabetes patients manifold.
Dr. Sonia Rawat said that all people suffering from diabetes are at risk of diabetic neuropathy and anyone can be affected. However, people whose sugar level remains high continuously and have diabetes for a long time, the risk of nerve damage increases. Diabetic patients who are overweight or who are struggling with obesity should be more careful about diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic people above the age of 40 are also at risk of nerve damage. High BP and high cholesterol also increase its risk in diabetes.
The US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Report It is said that 50% of patients with type 2 diabetes suffer from diabetic neuropathy, while 28% of patients with type 1 diabetes are facing nerve damage. From this, it can be estimated that millions of sugar patients are at risk of nerve damage. To avoid this, people should control their blood sugar level and monitor it regularly. Diet, physical activity and medicine play an important role in controlling sugar.
