50 people should also be made co-accused...Singhvi made a strong argument in the High Court, said- not only Kejriwal but 15 other people had signed

New Delhi. During the hearing on the bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the CBI has called him the ‘mastermind’ of the liquor scam. What Kejriwal’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said while opposing the arguments of the CBI may increase the problems of more than 50 bureaucrats. The High Court has reserved its decision on Kejriwal’s bail plea in the money laundering case related to the liquor scam.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna reserved the decision after hearing arguments from the lawyers appearing for Kejriwal and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Kejriwal’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the CBI says Kejriwal has signed it. Of course 15 other people have also signed it. The LG has signed it. I do not want to make the LG a co-accused, but the CBI, according to its logic, should also make him an accused. 50 bureaucrats, including the Chief Secretary, should also be made co-accused.

Singhvi further said that there is no direct evidence or anything against Kejriwal. CBI keeps calling Vijay Nair the main accused, whereas Vijay Nair got bail in the CBI case long ago. CBI calls Kejriwal the mastermind, but they do not tell a single thing about this mastermind. There were nine inter-ministerial committees to deal with the liquor policy, these had officials from various departments. After a year, the policy was published in July 2021. This is an institutional decision.

The CBI opposed Kejriwal’s bail plea in the case, calling him the ‘mastermind’ of the excise scam and said that if he is released, he can influence the witnesses. Advocate D.P. Singh, appearing for the CBI, said that the investigation could not be completed without his (Kejriwal’s) arrest. We filed the chargesheet within a month. After his arrest, we got the evidence. His own party workers themselves came forward to answer. Earlier in the day, the CBI filed its final chargesheet in the lower court against the Chief Minister and five others, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Durgesh Pathak.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, said that the arrest was made with the aim of keeping him in jail. He said that there is no direct evidence against Kejriwal and the investigating agency had arrested him on the basis of assumptions and imaginations. Singhvi said that the excise policy was an institutional decision, which was also signed by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi after going through several committees. He said that other people involved in this process should also be made co-accused.

Singhvi said that 15 other people have also signed it. The Lieutenant Governor has signed it… According to his (Singh’s) logic, these people should also be made accused. The CBI arrested Kejriwal from Tihar Jail on June 26 when he was in judicial custody in the money laundering case registered by the ED.
