Infrastructure Continuing the process of encouraging the development of the country, the Union Cabinet on Friday approved airport projects at Bagdogra in West Bengal and Bihta in Bihar with a total estimated cost of Rs 2,962 crore. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav informed about this decision taken in the cabinet meeting. He said that a new civil enclave will be developed at Bagdogra airport at a cost of Rs 1,549 crore. While a new civil enclave will be built at Bihta at a cost of Rs 1,413 crore.
Terminal Building at Bagdogra Airport
These decisions were taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to an official statement, a terminal building will be built in an area of 70,390 square meters under the new civil enclave at Bagdogra Airport. Its capacity will be to handle 3,000 passengers per hour. While its annual capacity will be to handle one crore passengers. Apart from this, an ‘apron’ (place for parking and repairing aircraft) will also be built at Bagdogra Airport. There will be a facility to park 10 A-321 type aircraft, two link taxiways (path connecting airstrips) and multi-level car parking. The statement said that this project will significantly increase the operational efficiency and passenger experience of Bagdogra Airport. This will strengthen its role as an important air travel center for the region. Apart from this, a new civil enclave will be developed at a cost of Rs 1,413 crore in Bihta, Bihar.
New Integrated Terminal Building at Bihta
The new integrated terminal building at Bihta will be spread over an area of 66,000 square metres. It will be equipped with the capacity to handle 3,000 passengers per hour. While its annual capacity will be to handle 50 lakh passengers. However, if needed, the capacity of the Bihta terminal can be increased to one crore passengers per year. According to an official statement, “This infrastructure project represents a strategic step in the projected situation of reaching the maximum capacity of Patna airport. Although the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is in the process of constructing a new terminal building at Patna airport, further expansion is hampered due to limited land availability.” According to the statement, “An ‘apron’ with 10 parking spaces suitable for A-321, B-737-800, A-320 type aircraft is to be constructed at Bihta. Apart from this, two link taxiways are also proposed to be built.” At present, there are 157 operational airports in the country and it is one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets.
