“We have a fellow citizen in front of us who has taken a lot of trouble to take the matter in the High Court twice and then to this court twice. With this meaningful observation, a bench of the Supreme Court has decided to an appeal in which the municipal committee of a small town in Maharashtra wrote its name in Marathi as well as Urdu on the signboard of its office (rainy vs Maharashtra State, 2025). The observation of the court quoted here, born on Indian land and raised on Indian land and by the Constitution, now reflects his annoyance and anxiety about this beautiful and melodious language recognized as one of the major languages of the country.
