The name of this drug is Triptolide, which is made from Chinese medicine. This drug has proven to be very effective in preclinical models of Medulloblastoma. The best thing is that no side effects have been seen when Triptolide is used to treat brain tumors. This has been revealed in a new study.

This study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation has revealed that the drug triptolide can increase the life span of children suffering from brain tumors and can help destroy cancer. A special form of the drug, Minelide, can be helpful in reducing the spread of cancer cells in the thin tissues of the spinal cord. Triptolide may be more effective in tumors that contain an oncogene or gene called MYC. This gene indicates the ability to cause cancer.

The research, conducted by Jezabel Rodriguez Blanco, an assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, focused on the drugs triptolide and minelide. In addition, triptolide’s ability to target an oncogene called MYC, or gene that has the potential to cause cancer, was discovered. The research showed that the more copies of MYC (proto-oncogene) the tumor had, the better triptolide worked. Its effect was 100 times greater in group 3 tumors with additional MYC copies.

Researchers found that Minelide can reduce tumor growth and the spread of cancer cells in the thin tissue covering the brain and spinal cord, called the leptomeninges. The use of a prodrug also increased the effectiveness of cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy drug currently used in treatment. Minelide is currently being tested in clinical trials in adults with various types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer.
