In the first phase of Lok Sabha today, on April 19, voting was held for 102 Lok Sabha seats in different states across the country. There was great enthusiasm among the people regarding voting. In many states, more than 72 percent voting took place. There was 100 percent voting at a polling station in a district of Arunachal Pradesh, but it would be surprising to know that only one woman voted here. On how 100% voting was achieved when only one person cast his vote, the Election Commission said that there was only one voter in that polling station.
In Malogam, a unique polling station set up in the remote Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, the only woman voter exercised her franchise and voted 100 percent.
A district official said 44-year-old Sokela Tayang cast her vote at around 1 pm. A team of polling officials traveled about 40 kilometers on foot in an area inaccessible to the lone voter and set up a polling booth there.
Sokela Tayang said, ‘I am happy to exercise my franchise and I thank the election officials for giving me the opportunity to vote.’
According to election officials, very few families live in Malogam and all the voters except Tayang are registered at other polling stations, but Tayang was not ready to go to other polling stations to vote. Chief Electoral Officer Pawan Kumar Sain said that numbers do not always matter, but it should be ensured that the voice of every citizen is heard. Sokela Tayang’s vote is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and equality.
This village comes under Hyuliang assembly constituency of Anjaw district bordering China and Arunachal East Lok Sabha seat. At least six candidates are trying their luck here. Here there is a direct contest between Bosiram Siram of Congress Party and sitting MP Tapir Gao of BJP.
Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously
Voting was held today for two Lok Sabha and 50 assembly seats of Arunachal Pradesh. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP has already won unopposed on 10 seats in the 60-member assembly. 133 candidates were in the fray in the assembly elections. 14 candidates stood for two Lok Sabha seats. There are a total of 8,92,694 voters in the state.
Eight candidates including Kiren Rijiju and Congress state unit president Nabam Tuki were in the fray for Arunachal West parliamentary seat. Sitting BJP MP from Arunachal East Tapir Gao and state Congress vice president Bosiram Siram were among the six candidates contesting the elections. The counting of votes for the assembly elections will take place on June 2, while the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections will take place on June 4.
