Bhubaneswar: There is a very old and famous saying that ‘Jaako Rakhe Saiyan, Maar Sake Na Koyi’. Something similar has been seen in the case of a 33-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh who was suffering from mental illness. According to reports, a 33-year-old woman was rescued from the overflowing Mahanadi river in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Thursday. Giving information about this, the police said that when the woman was rescued from the river, her feet were tied with shackles. When the woman was floating in the river, fishermen rescued her after hearing her screams.
‘The fishermen heard the woman screaming’
Police said that the woman rescued from the overflowing river has been identified as Sarojini Chauhan. This woman is a resident of Purath village situated on the banks of Mahanadi in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. Police said that the woman was rescued from Palsada village of Lakhanpur police station area in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This place is about 30 kilometers away from her village. Locals said that fishermen rescued the woman after hearing her screams. A fisherman said, ‘When our friends were fishing in Mahanadi, they heard someone shouting for help.’
‘The woman was living separately from her husband in her maternal home’
The fisherman said, ‘My friends immediately rescued the woman, gave her food and later handed her over to the police.’ Sarojini’s brother came to take her back and claimed that Sarojini was living with his family after separating from her husband. The brother claimed, ‘She was suffering from mental illness due to which we tied her legs with shackles. She somehow fell into the river and was swept away.’ Jharsuguda district’s Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Purushottamdas said that after being rescued from the river, the woman was examined at the Community Health Center and her condition is fine.
