Chandigarh In the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of Parliament, the Aam Aadmi Party openly opposed the ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) proposal. Party President Vijaypal ji, General Secretary Omkar Singh Aulakh, Discipline Convenor P.P. Ghai, Advocate Ferry Soft and Media In -charge Vikrant A.K. Tanwar placed a clear and solid side of the party on this issue.
At the meeting, the party described Onoe as a threat to constitutional original structure, federal system, freedom of states and local democracy.
Vijaypal ji said while satirizing:
“You are looking for droplets of nectar in poison, poison will remain poison.”
He said that this proposal is attractive to appear, but its real intention is fatal for democracy.
Advocate Ferry Soft placed the legal side:
He described Onoe as contrary to the basic spirit of the Constitution, citing Articles 1, 14, 19, 246, 324, 368 (2) and 73rd and 74th of the Constitution. Also said that giving the Election Commission the right to postpone or decide will be a violation of Article 324.
Omkar Singh Aulakh expressed technical and administrative objections:
“The current election system of the country is running successfully without great difficulty. Onoe will require comprehensive resources, EVMs, security forces, employees and arrangements, which are not practical.”
Vikrant A. Tanwar kept the media approach:
“The media to the media will only be reduced to national issues. This will suppress the voice of local issues and regional parties, which will be extremely deadly for democracy.”
Major objections:
Violation of federal structure – Article 1, 246
Threat to the autonomy of the states
Election Commission’s independence affect – Article 324
Violation of constitutional amendment process – Article 368 (2)
Violation of rights of regional parties
Neglect of local bodies – 73rd and 74th amendment
Party demands:
The ONOE proposal should be withdrawn immediately.
The phased election system should be considered as the soul of democracy.
The Aam Aadmi Party also alleged that the opinion of other parties in the committee meeting remained only a formalities, while the central government is moving towards imposing this proposal.
Party resolution:
“The Aam Aadmi Party will continue to struggle on every platform to protect democracy, constitution and federal system and will conduct a nationwide public awareness campaign on the dangers of this proposal.”
