Significantly, Coal India had floated the first tender for importing 24.16 lakh tonnes of coal to ensure adequate supply of fuel to power plants in the country. At the same time, a day after this, two medium-term tenders were issued to source 60 lakh tonnes of coal from abroad. A CIL official said that a meeting in this regard was held on June 14 and June 17, in which a total of 11 coal importing companies have been included.

According to Coal India, there are 11 companies involved in coal importers who have shown interest to import coal. Major Indian companies include Adani Enterprises Limited, Mohit Minerals and Chettinad Logistics Private Limited. Apart from this, some coal exporting agencies from abroad have also shown interest, one of which is from Indonesia.
Four to six weeks for shipment
In a statement made by Coal India, it has been said that in the tender, the bidders had requested for a significant amendment to reduce the time limit for the validity of the bid price from 90 days to 60 days. Apart from this, he has also been asked to fix the time period for supply of the first installment of shipment between four to six weeks from the date of the letter. Earlier, the supply schedule was based on a particular percentage of deliveries in each month of Q2 FY23.

For import of coal, CIL has amended the bidding document and has also issued a letter on the e-procurement portal to expedite the process without any hassle. It said that for coal coming to Indian shores, quantity assessment and quality testing should be done through empaneled third party sampling agencies of CIL. As per the circular, the last date for receipt of bids for short term tender is June 29, while for medium term is July 5.
