New Delhi. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, who has been speaking against Mamata Banerjee, was silent for a long time. He may not have liked Rahul Gandhi’s sympathy for Mamata Banerjee in the Lok Sabha elections, but the incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has shaken him too. When Adhir broke his silence, he did so in a very strong manner. He properly explained to senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, who was praising the Kolkata Police by shouting in the Supreme Court, and advised him to withdraw from the case.
Rahul Gandhi has given one or two statements in this case, but Priyanka Gandhi’s silence is surprising. Priyanka, who dragged the rape incidents in UP into politics during Yogi’s rule, is seen behind the scenes in the Kolkata case. The slogan ‘Larki hun lad sakti hun’ seems to have gone to the background. Today, when people have come out on the streets from Gujarat to Assam to get justice for Doctor Bitiya, Priyanka Gandhi’s silence raises many questions.
When has Priyanka spoken on other rape cases including the Hathras incident?
In 2020, a case of rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit girl came to light in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh. She was also cremated in a hurry at midnight, after which the matter gained momentum. The Congress had raised questions on the ruling party, demanding a judicial inquiry into the allegations. Priyanka Gandhi had said, “In Uttar Pradesh, there has been a practice of eliminating the families of girls and women who are harassed for seeking justice. Women were tortured everywhere, their families were destroyed – from Unnao to Hathras and Kanpur. In this jungle raj, there is no such thing as law anymore; being a woman has become a crime. After all, what steps should the crores of women of the state take?”
What did Priyanka Gandhi say in the Swati Maliwal case?
On the assault case of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi had said, “…if any atrocity is committed against a woman anywhere, we stand with that woman. I always stand with women – no matter which party they belong to. The second thing is that AAP will discuss and decide among themselves on this issue.”
What did Rahul say on Kolkata doctor murder case?
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi gave his first reaction on August 14 through social media regarding the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. Attacking the Mamata Banerjee government on ‘X’, he wrote, “The whole country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The way the layers of the cruel and inhuman act done to her are being exposed, there is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors community and women. The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.”
He wrote, “This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like medical college, then with what assurance should parents send their daughters outside for studies? Why are even the strict laws made after the Nirbhaya case unsuccessful in preventing such crimes? Every party, every section will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete measures on the ever-increasing incidents against women from Hathras to Unnao, and from Kathua to Kolkata.” In the end, Rahul Gandhi wrote, “I stand with the victim’s family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be given such a punishment that is presented as an example in the society.”
What did Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary say about the incident that happened in RG Kar Hospital?
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, while addressing the media on Thursday, urged Kapil Sibal to step down from his role in the legal proceedings related to the Kolkata rape-murder. Sibal, a former Congress leader, is representing the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court in the rape case. Chowdhury said, “I would like to request him to step down from this case. This is the sentiment of the people of Bengal. Keeping in mind the anger of the common people in Bengal, it would be better if you do not defend the criminals.”
