In August last year too, it was extended for six months.
The Assam government had extended the status of the disturbed region in the state for six months with effect from August 28 last year. AFSPA was implemented in Assam in November 1990 and since then it has been extended every six months after review by the state government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on January 1 that the army had been withdrawn from Assam except in five-six districts and the state government would take some practical decisions when the AFSPA is renewed.
The Chief Minister said, as far as AFSPA is concerned, something good will happen in Assam 2022, don’t know how and when. But I am an optimist. We look at 2022 as a year of hope. Something positive will happen. Civil society groups and activists have been demanding the withdrawal of the draconian law from the Northeast, claiming human rights violations by the armed forces. The demand for repeal of AFSPA has gained momentum after 14 civilians were killed in firing by security forces in an anti-militancy operation and retaliatory violence in Nagaland’s Mon district on December 4 last year.
