Dhaka: Amid the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, the process of forming an interim government has begun. Meanwhile, a day after being released from house arrest, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia thanked the countrymen for their “struggle to make the impossible possible”. Zia said that the country will be rebuilt not with “anger” or “revenge”, but with “love and peace”. In her speech given through video link at the BNP rally in Nayapaltan, 79-year-old Zia appealed for peace. This is Zia’s first public speech since 2018.

Zia thanked those who fought for her and prayed for her release from prison, the Daily Star newspaper reported. “I have been released now. I want to thank those brave people who fought a do-or-die battle to make the impossible possible. This victory gives us a new possibility to come out of the rubble of loot, corruption and bad governance. We need to make this country prosperous,” Zia said.

‘We need love and peace’

The former Prime Minister urged everyone to strengthen the hands of the youth, saying, “Youth are our future. We need to build a democratic Bangladesh to fulfill their dream for which they have shed their blood. No destruction, no anger and no revenge, we need love and peace to rebuild our country.”

was sentenced to prison

Zia was sentenced to 17 years in prison for corruption in 2018 during the tenure of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina (76) resigned as prime minister on Monday and moved to India amid massive protests against her government. Zia is currently undergoing treatment for various ailments. Zia was released on Tuesday on an executive order of President Mohammad Shahabuddin after the ouster of the Hasina-led Awami League government. Zia was in jail for more than two years. Zia and Hasina have been a political rival in Bangladesh for decades. (Language)
