India’s legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra is going to receive the Olympic Order Award. Bindra will be honored with this award for his outstanding work in the Olympic movement. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will honor him with this award at the award ceremony organized in Paris on August 10. Let us tell you, this is a very special moment not only for Abhinav Bindra but for the entire country. He will be only the second Indian to be honored with this award.
Special day for Abhinav Bindra
IOC President Thomas Bach had already written a letter to Abhinav Bindra informing him that the IOC Executive Board has decided that he should be honoured with the Olympic Order for his commendable service to the Olympic moment. Earlier, this award has been given to former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. So far, 116 personalities have received the Gold Olympic Order. Indira Gandhi was given this award in the award ceremony held in Mumbai in 1983.
What is the Olympic Order Award?
The Olympic Order, established in 1975, is the highest award of the Olympic movement, given for special contribution to the Olympic moment. Earlier this award was given in three categories – Gold, Silver and Bronze. But in 1984 it was decided that in future this award would be given to heads of nations and personalities making special contributions in the Gold category. Traditionally, the IOC awards the Olympic Order to the main national organizers at the closing ceremony of every Olympic Games. Let us tell you, Abhinav Bindra is promoting Indian sports through the Foundation.
Won gold for India in Olympics
Abhinav Bindra is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics. At the age of 25, Abhinav Bindra became the first Indian athlete to win an individual gold medal in the Olympics, winning gold in the 10 meter air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bindra participated in the 1998 Commonwealth Games at the age of 15. At that time, he was the youngest athlete to participate in these games.
