Captain Rohit’s name added to the bad list
After losing the series, an embarrassing record has been added to the name of captain Rohit Sharma. He has become the third Indian captain to lose a bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka. Before him, the Indian team had lost bilateral ODI series against Sri Lanka under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin. India last lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka in the year 1997.
Indian batsmen flopped
The Indian team had a very bad start. When the first wicket fell at a score of 37, Shubman Gill was out after scoring 6 runs. After this, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma took the responsibility of scoring runs. But as soon as both of them were out, the Indian batting collapsed. Rohit Sharma scored 35 runs and Kohli scored 20 runs. Only Rohit, Kohli and Riyan Parag (15 runs), Washington Sundar (30 runs) were successful in reaching double figures from India. The rest of the batsmen kept yearning to stay at the crease.
Sri Lankan spinners did wonders
Dunith Wellalage performed brilliantly for Sri Lanka. He took five wickets in the match. Sri Lankan spinners dominated the entire match. Indian batsmen could not perform well against the spinners. Mahesh Theekshna and Jeffrey Vandersay took 2-2 wickets each. Asitha Fernando took one wicket.
Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando batted brilliantly for the Sri Lankan team. Both of them shared a partnership of 89 runs for the first wicket. Nissanka scored 45 runs. Avishka missed his century by just four runs. He scored 96 runs. Kusal Mendis, who came to bat at number three, also scored 59 runs. It was because of these three batsmen that the Sri Lankan team was able to score a respectable score. For India, Riyan Parag took the maximum of three wickets.
