After the political coup in Bangladesh, the next Women’s T20 World Cup is in danger, ICC may take away the hosting

by Abhishek Mehra
August 5, 2024

New Delhi. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently resigned from her post and left the country. As a result, the army has taken control of the power of Bangladesh. This political crisis can also affect sports events, and in particular, concerns have increased about hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup. There is unrest and violence in Bangladesh these days over the reservation quota for students. However, despite the situation in the country, Bangladesh is adamant on hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Earlier, South Africa hosted the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023.

According to the ICC, the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from 3 to 20 October. The matches of this tournament will be played in Sylhet and Dhaka. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has clarified that the ongoing violence and unrest in the country will not affect the hosting of the World Cup. The BCB president said that there will be no impact on the organization of the tournament and they are committed to hosting the tournament with full preparation. The final match will be played in Dhaka, where the situation is still worrying.

BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury told ‘Cricbuzz’, “We are firm on our plans and are fully prepared to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. We will organize this tournament successfully at all costs.” Despite the political instability in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is continuing its preparations to host the Women’s T20 World Cup and has expressed full hope for the success of the tournament.

Bangladesh is hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup for the second time, but this meeting may also consider it. Earlier, Sri Lanka hosted the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2012 and India in 2016. The tournament was held in Bangladesh in 2014. Australia is considered the most successful team in the Women’s T20 World Cup, having won the title six times so far. England and West Indies have won this tournament once each.
