As the journey of the teams is coming to an end in the T20 World Cup 2024, most of them are witnessing a period of big changes, including the coaching staff. The name of the Sri Lankan team has also been added to this, in which the head coach of the team, Chris Silverwood, has now announced his resignation from his post after the team’s exit from the group stage. Apart from this, Sri Lankan cricket veteran former player Mahela Jayawardene, who was in the post of advisory coach, has also resigned from his post. Silverwood has cited personal reasons behind his decision.
Sri Lanka Cricket released Silverwood’s statement
During the tenure of Chris Silverwood, the Sri Lankan team achieved many important victories, including victory in the 2022 Asia Cup. Apart from this, the team won the ODI series against Australia at home and the Test tour in Bangladesh. The team also managed to reach the final of the 2023 Asia Cup. Despite all this, the Sri Lankan team was also able to reach the knockout stage of the T20 World Cup played in 2022 and 2024 and a very poor performance was seen from the Sri Lankan team in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Sri Lanka Cricket also released a statement from its side informing about Chris Silverwood’s decision in which Silverwood said that being the coach of an international team, you have to stay away from your family for a long time. After a long conversation with my family, I have now decided that I want to return home now. It is a matter of great honor for me that I was a part of Sri Lanka Cricket, in which I will have many good memories.
Jayawardene also left the post of consultant coach
Mahela Jayawardene, who took over as the consultant coach of the Sri Lanka cricket team in 2022, has also left his post after the team’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. Sri Lanka Cricket, while informing about Jayawardene’s resignation, said in its statement that Jayawardene helped implement significant changes in the national team ecosystem and the structure of the High-Performance Center during his tenure. Sri Lanka Cricket takes this opportunity to wish Mahela Jayawardene all the best for the future and thank him for the services rendered during his tenure.
