New Delhi. PM Narendra Modi had said something important before assuming power for the third time. Modi had said that there is going to be an earthquake in the country’s politics in the next 6 months. People could not understand at that time what kind of political earthquake Modi was talking about, but if the news that is coming out now is true, then a political earthquake is sure to come in the country.
This case is of Agusta Westland helicopter scam. Agusta Westland scam came to light during the Congress led UPA government. This case was investigated by CBI. CBI arrested many people including former Air Force chief SP Tyagi and his brother. In Italy, many people were prosecuted in connection with the scam and were sentenced. Now the news is that the Italian government has handed over some documents related to its court case and evidence related to Agusta Westland scam to India. This can speed up the investigation of Agusta Westland scam here too. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya has even tweeted and claimed that this is the reason why Congress raised questions on PM Narendra Modi’s recent Italy visit.
During the Congress-led UPA government, the Air Force had signed a deal with Italian company Finmeccanica to buy 12 Agusta Westland helicopters to transport VVIPs. Rs 3600 crore was fixed to be paid for the purchase of these helicopters. Then it was revealed that brokerage was given in the deal of Agusta Westland helicopters. After which the deal was cancelled and a CBI inquiry was ordered. About 8 months before Narendra Modi became PM for the first time in May 2014, an Italian court had convicted the CEO of a company, the chairman of an Italian defense company and 2 middlemen on charges of bribery in the Agusta Westland helicopter deal. If the investigation here intensifies after getting documents from Italy, then many politicians and bureaucrats are also likely to be caught in the Agusta Westland helicopter scam.
