Tehran: Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said on Wednesday that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but Israel is suspected of carrying out the attack, which has vowed to kill Haniya and other Hamas leaders over the surprise attack in the country on October 7. Haniya was in Tehran on Tuesday to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran did not say how Haniya was killed or who killed him. The Revolutionary Guard said that the matter is being investigated.

Israel did not respond

Analysts on Iran’s state television immediately began blaming Israel for the killing. Israel has yet to comment on it. Haniyeh left the Gaza Strip in 2019 and was living in exile in Qatar. Hamas’ top leader in Gaza is Yehya Sinwar, who plotted the October 7 attack on Israel. 1,200 people were killed in this attack and about 250 people were taken hostage.

How will the ceasefire happen?

The killing of Ismail Haniyya comes at a time when US President Joe Biden’s administration is trying to get Hamas and Israel to agree on a temporary ceasefire and a hostage release agreement. The White House has not yet reacted to Haniyya’s killing. (AP)
