Washington: The US has expanded the scope of sanctions on Russia, imposing more than 300 new sanctions, which are largely aimed at preventing individuals and companies from various countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, from helping Russia. The US has taken this step ahead of the G7 summit in Italy, where increasing support for Ukraine and dismantling Russia’s war machinery will be top priorities.
Chinese companies are the target
The sanctions imposed on Wednesday target Chinese companies that are helping Russia in its war against Ukraine. The US has imposed sanctions on 4,000 Russian companies and individuals since the war began, with the aim of stopping the flow of money and weapons to Russia.
‘Continuous process against Russia’
“Putin is a very capable adversary who is constantly working to find allies,” Aron Forsberg, the State Department’s director for economic sanctions policy and implementation, told The Associated Press. He said sanctions against Russia are an ongoing process.
The rationale behind the restrictions
The sanctions imposed on Wednesday target more than $100 million worth of trade between Russia and its war suppliers. The more than 300 new sanctions are aimed primarily at preventing individuals and companies from various countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, from helping Russia. (AP)
