Washington. Christopher Padila, a former Under Secretary of International Trade in the US Department of Commerce and expert on foreign policy affairs, has warned that the ongoing business tension between the US and India can cause long -term damage to this strategic partnership.
Christopher Padila said in a conversation with , “I worry that we are threatening this important relationship due to short -term issues.” Padila also said that some recent policies of America in India will be remembered for a long time and this may arise the question whether America is actually a trusted partner.
He said, “I know that during years of work with my colleagues in India, it has been experienced that such insults are not forgotten quickly.”
Padila, who has served in the administration of former President George W. Bush, is currently working as a senior advisor in a global advisory firm called Breanswick. He said that the roots of the current crisis are under the pressure of President Donald Trump to open India’s agriculture and dairy sector and interfering in India’s independent foreign policy.
Padila said, “Given the structure of the Indian agricultural market, the demand for change in it is a fundamental issue for India and the other is its independent foreign policy.”
On the impact of American tariffs on India’s exports, he said, “It will be painful, but Indian exporters can seek alternative markets.” Giving examples, he said that global markets are available for products like gems and textiles and iPhones made in India can also be sold in other countries.
Speaking on foreign policy, he said that India’s relations with Russia have always been a ‘bottleneck’ in the US-India relations, but in view of India’s strategic importance in the context of China, the US has been accepting it till now. However, now that policy seems to be changing.
He wondered, “The US is currently adopting a more soft attitude towards China, while harming relations with India.”
Padila warned that India’s forced strategy can get closer to Russia and China, although there are mutual contradictions in the foreign policy of these three countries. He said, “It is not in the interest of America to force countries like India and push it towards another pole.”
Padila, who was involved in the civil nuclear deal and business talks with India in the 2000s, clearly stated that the pressure strategy on lively democracy like India will never work. This is not a small country, which can compromise on its basic interests.
