Washington: The effects of the war going on in Gaza between Israel and Hamas are being seen in America. Protests by students were continuing in many universities of America, which now seem to be subsiding. Meanwhile, students have left their camp at the University of Southern California (USC) after being surrounded by the police. With this, the convocation ceremony of Northeastern University concluded peacefully in Fenway Park, Boston. The developments at these two places are being closely monitored following several arrests last month.
a warning was given
94 people were arrested at USC in Los Angeles and about 100 people were arrested at Northeastern University in Boston. Several Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived on campus around 4 a.m. to assist USC campus security officers. The university also warned protesters of arrest on social media and in person.
How many arrested?
In the videos that have surfaced on social media, some protesters can be seen packing their belongings and leaving the university. University management said that there is no news of anyone’s arrest. According to data compiled by AP based on statements from universities and police, about 2,500 people have been arrested on about 50 campuses since April 18.
‘Vandalism will not be tolerated’
Let us tell you that US President Joe Biden had also reacted to the student protests. Biden had defended the right to protest, but also said that ‘order must be maintained’. He had said, “Dissent is necessary for democracy, but there should never be chaos while expressing dissent.” The President had said that peaceful dissent is an important part of democracy, but vandalism will not be tolerated. Destroying property is not a peaceful protest, it is against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, closing campuses, forcing classes to be cancelled, none of these are peaceful protests.
