Evan Gershkovich, American journalist
Tallinn: The ice on the relations between Russia and America does not seem to be melting. Tensions remain between the two countries. Recently, a man was convicted in Russia for stealing and threatening to kill an American soldier. Now Wall Street Journal journalist Ivan Gershkovich, who was arrested in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg 15 months ago on charges of espionage, has been presented in court when the hearing begins. Ivan Gershkovich (32) is the first Western journalist to be arrested on charges of espionage after the Soviet Russia era.

The allegations leveled by Russia have been strongly denied by Gershkovitch, her employer The Wall Street Journal and the US government. The State Department has said that Gershkovitch was ‘wrongly detained’ and the US government is committed to seeking her release. The newspaper has repeatedly raised Gershkovitch’s case and now it has become a hot topic ahead of the US presidential election.
Know when the arrest took place
Gershkovich was arrested on March 29, 2023. Since then he has been kept in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo prison. US Ambassador Lynn Tracy said on the first anniversary of his arrest, “Ivan has shown strength in the face of this serious situation.” If the court finds Ivan Gershkovich guilty, he could be jailed for up to 20 years, which is almost certain.
