Dhaka: Big news is coming out amidst the violence going on in Bangladesh for many days. The reservation against which Bangladesh has been burning for many days and the reservation for which the students have started a movement against the government, the country’s top court has given the biggest blow to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by giving a historic verdict. The Supreme Court on Sunday reduced the reservation in government jobs amidst the uproar over reservation in the country. This brought joy to the students. At the same time, it is being seen as a big defeat for the government, because the government was not at all ready to withdraw its decision on reservation. Along with this, the Supreme Court has also appealed to the agitating students to return to class.

The Supreme Court in its decision said that 93 percent of government jobs should be allocated on the basis of merit based system and the remaining 7 percent should be left for the relatives of those who fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and other categories. Earlier, there was 30 percent reservation in jobs for relatives of war fighters. But the Supreme Court has rejected the government’s decision. This is being seen as a big victory for the students.

Why is the movement happening

Bangladesh has been witnessing days of protests demanding reform in the reservation system in government jobs and as the situation worsened, a strict curfew was imposed across the country on Saturday. Military forces patrolled various parts of the national capital Dhaka. Bangladeshi authorities have not shared any official number of dead and injured but a report published in the news daily ‘Prothom Alo’ on Saturday said that at least 105 people have died so far.
