The economic crisis in Sri Lanka continues to deepen and the people there are on the streets against the government. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of the country, Mahinda Rajapaksa, while addressing the country, has appealed to the people for peace. Rajapaksa told the countrymen that whenever you protest on the street, we lose dollars. He said the government would take all possible steps to resolve the crisis.
In fact, citizens are protesting against the government on the streets in protest against the crumbling economy and inflation of Sri Lanka. They are accusing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his administration of mismanaging the crisis. The protesters are extremely angry with the Rajapaksa family and are demanding them to step down. In such a situation, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa himself has come forward in view of the increasing pressure to resign.
In his address to the nation on Monday evening, Mahinda Rajapaksa assured people that his government was working round the clock to address their woes and appealed to the protesters to end their agitation. He said that every minute you spend on the streets is losing precious dollars to the country. Mahinda Rajapaksa said that all parties were urged in Parliament to come forward to resolve the current crisis in the country, but no one came forward.
The Prime Minister’s address came hours after Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa alleged that the government’s poor economic policies contributed to the country’s economic slowdown. He said that the situation in the country was getting worse due to increase in the prices of essential food items like medicine, milk powder, rice, sugar, pulses, wheat flour and essential food items like gas, diesel, kerosene and petrol.
On the other hand, experts believe that the economic plight of Sri Lanka can prove to be more deadly than the corona epidemic. Doctors warned on Sunday that they were now running out of life-saving medicines. At present, Sri Lanka is also facing acute shortage of electricity, water, fuel and food items. Apart from this, there is also a shortage of medicines.
