Port Blair: Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 took place across the country today. In this phase, voting took place on 102 seats in 21 states and union territories. Also, for the first time in history, another wonderful work has been done. For the first time, 7 people of the Shompen tribe in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday cast their vote for the lone Lok Sabha seat.

This tribe is a ‘Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group’ (PVTG) of the Greater Nicobar Islands. The people of the Shompen tribe not only exercised their franchise at polling booth 411 called ‘Shompen Hut’ located inside the forest staff quarters, but they also took selfies at the ‘cut-outs’ made by the Election Commission of India.

Giving information, Chief Electoral Officer B S Jaglan said, “For the first time, a total of 7 people from the Shompen tribe exercised their franchise. First we trained them about EVM and VVPAT. It was good to see that they came out of the jungle.” And for the first time he took part in voting.”
The official further said, “Two other tribal tribes like Onge and Great Andamanese also voted like in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but out of total 98 voters of Shompen tribe, 7 have cast their vote for the first time.” According to the 2011 census, the total population of Shompen tribe was 229. Clash between Congress and BJP
Please note that a total of 12 candidates are in the fray in Andaman and Nicobar. But the special contest is between only two candidates, Congress and BJP candidates. Outgoing Congress MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma and BJP candidate Vishnu Pad Ray are trying their luck on this seat.
