New Delhi. Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu has given a big blow to his party Congress by joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. Bittu, grandson of former CM Beant Singh, is a prominent leader of Punjab Congress, who has been elected MP thrice before. He had won the Ludhiana seat by significant margins during the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, he had reached the Lok Sabha by winning from Anandpur Sahib seat during the 2009 general elections.
In March 2021, Ravneet Singh Bittu was appointed as the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha for a period of time. This was when Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the current Congress leader in Lok Sabha, was busy with the 2021 West Bengal election campaign. On this occasion Vinod Tawde offered primary membership to Bittu highlighting his lineage as the grandson of Beant Singh. Tawde said that Bittu’s association with BJP will further strengthen the party in Punjab.
In 2009, Ravneet Singh Bittu, as President of Punjab Youth Congress, started a campaign against drug addiction. In 2011, he also went on a hunger strike in support of the establishment of a Drug Control Board in the state. He has been at the forefront of farmers’ protests outside Delhi borders and was even attacked during a protest at the Singhu border.
