The threat of war between Russia and Ukraine is increasing. While the Putin government seems to be constantly preparing to attack Ukraine, all Western countries, including the US, seem helpless by any action other than sanctions. These scenarios have raised Taiwan’s concern the most at the moment. Sensing the danger, the Taiwanese government, which is located just a short distance from the coast of China, has issued a high-alert and has instructed its three armies to be ready.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said, “We have continued to work on increasing our strength so that we can keep our army fully prepared on the strait with China.” In one of his tweets, he also targeted Russia over the Ukraine crisis and said that Taiwan fully supports Ukraine’s autonomy.
China can take advantage of Ukraine crisis, what is Taiwan’s view?
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has already warned that China may consider taking advantage of the Ukraine crisis and we are watching its every move. In an interview to UK ITV News, he said, “China may consider launching a military operation against us, but we are ready to face it at any time.”
Why can China take an aggressive stand against Taiwan?
Significantly, in 1949, the Government of the Republic of China (ROC), which ruled China, was defeated against the communist regime. After this, where the main part of China was ruled by the Communist Party, the previous government was confined to Taiwan. However, Taiwan has been ruled by a democratic government separate from China since then.
Taiwan, on the other hand, is considered part of China by the United Nations. Despite this, however, Taiwan has a democratic rule unlike China’s dictatorial rule. China has been continuously objecting to this and has been claiming Taiwan’s autonomy. However, so far Taiwan has managed to separate itself from China to a great extent.
