New Delhi. The Election Commission has indicated that assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir soon. The Election Commission of India has invited applications from unrecognized parties registered in Jammu and Kashmir for the allocation of ‘election symbol’. This indicates that assembly elections are going to be held soon in the Union Territory for the first time after the abolition of Article 370. According to the statement of the Election Commission, they have decided to seek applications for the allocation of election symbol with ‘immediate effect’ under Para 10B of the Election Symbol (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
While currently recognised national and state parties have their own ‘reserved election symbols’, registered unrecognised parties have to apply for them to field candidates in elections. Under the Election Symbols Order, any registered unrecognised political party can apply for an ‘election symbol’ six months before the term of the House ends. However, since there is no assembly functioning in Jammu and Kashmir yet, the Election Commission is calling for applications.
At present, the date of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections has not been announced yet. However, in December last year, the Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by 30 September. Although there were speculations about holding elections in the Union Territory along with the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission had said that this is not practical due to ‘security’ reasons.
Who is in and who is out of Narendra Modi’s cabinet, who can become minister from JDU-TDP, how much share will Manjhi and Chirag get?
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said earlier this week that the Election Commission will start the election process in the Union Territory very soon. He said, ‘We will start the election process in Jammu and Kashmir very soon, we are very excited about the voting percentage… Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest voter turnout in four decades at 58.58 per cent, while the valley recorded 51.05 per cent voting.’
