There can be many reasons behind modifying a car and a bike, such as improving their looks, updating the styling, improving performance, etc. Not only this, some people also get their cars and bikes modified in order to impress other people. Although manufacturers do not recommend modification, people still go to private garages to get their cars and bikes modified. This is seen in many countries, of which India is also one. But it is completely illegal to do so in India.

If you are thinking of getting your vehicle modified, then you may have to face a lot of trouble. If caught in the offense of modification, you may have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 per modification. Not only this, for this work you may have to face jail for 6 months. In 2019, the Supreme Court (SC) against the modification has declared it illegal. According to the Supreme Court, contrary to the information given in the registration paper of the vehicle, any kind of modification in the vehicle will be considered illegal, for which there is a provision of punishment.
Some minor changes may be made
Some minor changes can be made to the vehicles with permission and paperwork. If someone wants to change the fuel type of his car or wants to get a CNG kit installed in the car, then permission has to be taken from the RTO. Similarly, permission of RTO has to be taken to change the color of the vehicle. Along with this, other minor changes such as installing door protectors or rain guards, changing suspension settings, slightly changing tire size and changing headlights/tail-lights are not considered illegal.
