New Delhi. Whenever the Australian team comes out to play against the Indian team, the excitement is at its peak. Now five test matches will be played instead of four in the Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Cricket Australia announced this on Monday. This will be the first time since 1991-92 that a five-Test series will be played between these two countries.
This series, played for the Border Gavaskar Trophy, will be the highlight of Australia’s 2024-25 schedule. Its program will be released in the coming days. Cricket Australia posted on ‘X’, “For the first time since 1991-92, a five-Test series will be played between Australia and India this summer. This series for the Border Gavaskar Trophy will be the main attraction of the domestic schedule of 2024-25.
“The BCCI remains steadfast in its dedication to preserving the rich heritage of Test cricket,” Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said in a Cricket Australia release. This is a format that we respect the most. “Our collaboration with Cricket Australia to extend the Border Gavaskar Trophy to five Test matches reflects our collective commitment to promoting the importance of Test cricket.”
The first test match of this series can be played in Perth. Cricket Australia President Mike Baird said, “Given the intense rivalry between our two countries, we are very pleased that the Border Gavaskar Trophy has now been reduced to five Test matches.”
India captures Border Gavaskar Trophy
The dominance of the Indian team has been seen in the last four Border Gavaskar Trophies. Since 2016, the Australian team has failed to win it. India has not lost this series since winning the 2016-17 series in India. Team India won it in 2018 and again in 2020. Even while playing in India in 2022, Team India won it 2-1.
