New Delhi. Banaras Rail Engine Factory (BLW) dedicated its 2,500th electric rail engine to the nation on Saturday, achieving a historic achievement. General Manager Naresh Pal Singh flagged off the 6,000 HP engine of WAP-7 category in the presence of officers and employees.
The ceremony proved to be an important milestone in the journey towards modernization and self -reliance of Indian Railways.
The 2,500th electric locomotive manufactured from state -of -the -art technology and indigenous innovation reflects the ability to work at a fast pace of BLW. Reaching this achievement within just eight years is considered a record in the manufacturing history of Indian Railways.
The program also included BLW’s strong workforce along with General Manager Naresh Pal Singh, including female employees like Fitter Anita Devi and Assistant Shruti Srivastava, which symbolizes the increasing participation of women in the main engineering roles.
Officials shared information about the progress of BLW, which highlighted the achievements of the factory in locomotive production, export and ongoing development projects.
Technically advanced new WAP-7 Electric Locomotive Real-Time Monitoring System, Air-conditioned driver cab, regional braking and high-speed passenger and high-speed passenger and express trains are equipped with a revised gear ratio to pull up to 140 km/h. It will be posted in Krishnarajapuram shed of South-West Railway.
Since its inception, BLW has created a total of 10,822 engines, including 7,498 diesel and 2,500 electric engines.
It produced 472 electric engines in FY 2024-25 alone.
The factory is also fulfilling international orders and recently two of the ten AC Diesel-Electric engines ordered by Mozambique have been sent.
