Earlier, the protesters had surrounded the Supreme Court and given Obaidul Hasan an hour’s time to resign. Obaidul Hasan had called a meeting of all the judges without consulting the newly formed interim government, which the protesters opposed and insisted on the demand for resignation. Obaidul Hasan was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court last year. Hasan is considered a loyalist of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

After Sheikh Hasina, Nobel Prize-winning economist Mohammad Yunus has been chosen as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh. The newly formed interim government of Bangladesh has emphasized the need to maintain ‘balance’ in Dhaka’s relations with ‘big countries’. It has also said that restoring law and order is the main priority of the interim government at this time, other tasks will also be done after the first goal is achieved.

Army deployed in Supreme Court premises

Bangladesh Army troops have been deployed at the Supreme Court premises as hundreds of protesting students have gathered. The Chief Justice told reporters at the Supreme Court premises that he has decided to resign keeping in mind the safety of judges of the Supreme Court, High Courts and lower courts across the country amid the changing circumstances, reports the Daily Star.
