Dhaka: After the coup in Bangladesh, the interim government led by Nobel Prize winner Professor Mohammad Yunus will take oath on August 8. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman gave this information. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, General Waqar said that the interim government can take oath on Thursday at 8 pm. He also said that the Advisory Council can have 15 members. Till then Mohammad Yunus has appealed to the protesters to maintain peace.

Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin on Tuesday appointed economist Yunus (84) as the head of the interim government, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country following violent protests over a dispute related to job reservation. Nobel Prize-winning professor Mohammad Yunus, who has been appointed the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, on Wednesday appealed to all to “maintain peace” and “avoid all forms of violence”. Yunus (84) said, “Let us make the best use of this new victory. Let us not let this victory go to waste because of any mistake on our part.”

Big message given to Bangladesh

Yunus, an economist by profession, is likely to return home from Paris to take charge. He said, “I appeal to everyone to maintain peace in the current situation and avoid all forms of violence and damage.” Earlier, students in Bangladesh managed traffic as volunteers for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. At the same time, a top police officer called upon every member of the police force to gradually return to duty and restore law and order. According to reports in the local media, chaos is at its peak in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on Monday and policemen are not available to maintain law and order or manage traffic. Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) A.K.M. Shahidur Rahman was appointed as the top officer of Bangladesh Police on Tuesday to deal with the current crisis.

The students took charge

Students, including members of the Bangladesh Scouts, were seen managing traffic at several places, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. In the latest reshuffle of the security forces on Wednesday, Rahman has now been appointed the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The newspaper reported that several policemen were reported to have been killed in attacks on police stations and various centres across the country on Tuesday, creating an unprecedented situation. The authorities on Wednesday reshuffled the top posts of the RAB and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the Pratham Alo news portal reported. “AKM Shahidur Rahman has been appointed the director general of RAB, while Mohammad Moin Ul Hasan will replace Habibur Rahman as the commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police,” it said. Hours before the reshuffle, President Mohammad Shahabuddin appointed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus as the head of the interim government on Tuesday night.

Khalid Zia gave the address

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who was released from jail after her arch rival Hasina was ousted from power, addressed a huge rally of her party in Dhaka, where she appealed for peace to rebuild the country. Zia (79) was sentenced to 17 years in jail on corruption charges in 2018 during Hasina’s rule. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Zia said, “I have now been released. I want to thank those brave people who were in a ‘do or die’ struggle to make the impossible possible.” She said, “This victory has brought new possibilities for us to overcome loot, corruption and sick politics. We need to make this country a prosperous country.” Zia said, “No destruction, no resentment and no revenge, we need love and peace to rebuild our country.” Attorney General Abu Mohammad Aminuddin, who was appointed in October 2020, resigned on Wednesday.
