Narendra Modi was elected leader in the meeting of National Democratic Alliance (NDA). With this, the way to equal Jawaharlal Nehru’s record has been cleared. Modi is going to take oath on June 9. But even before the beginning of Modi 3.0, signs of change have started appearing. Even before the NDA meeting held in the Central Hall of Parliament, the letter of check and balance started coming from Janata Dal United (JDU) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP). When the meeting took place, the wind of change coming in Modi’s third term could be felt in it too. The way Modi himself picked up the copy of the Constitution and placed it on his forehead, it gave a clear message. A message to those who were accusing Modi of changing the Constitution and removing reservation. The impact of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s tally came down from 303 to 240 was clearly visible. In the meeting, the voice of BJP was less and that of NDA was more loud.
Understand this from the seating arrangement on the stage. Chandrababu Naidu was next to Modi and Niti Kumar was next to him. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh proposed that Narendra Modi be elected the leader of the NDA parliamentary party. Naidu was the first to speak in support and spoke vigorously. He also mentioned his role during Vajpayee’s time in a subtle way. He mentioned Modi’s vision of a developed India in 2047 and emphasized on the path of ‘Sabka Saath-Sabka Vikas’ for this. Naidu emphasized development in his address. Nitish Kumar became the center of the event by touching Modi’s feet but in his speech he indicated the demand for special state status like this – You are doing everything. It is happening in Bihar as well. Whatever is left, you must complete it this time. Some people have messed up in the elections but nothing is going to happen from that.
Majority is necessary to run a government but consensus is very important to run a country. I assure the countrymen that we will work with consensus in the way you have given us the responsibility by giving us the majority.
When I started talking after the thunderous applause, I started with NDA in the end as well. In the entire speech, the focus was on NDA instead of BJP. Inclusive Modi put forward the alliance instead of the party. He said – People gave NDA a chance to serve by forming government in 22 states. This alliance of ours is a true reflection of the true spirit of India. Pre-poll alliance has never been as successful in the history of India as NDA has been. Majority is necessary to run the government but consensus is very important to run the country. I assure the countrymen that the way you have given the responsibility by giving majority, we will go along with consensus. NDA has completed almost three decades. The journey of three decades in 75 years of independence gives a message of great strength. Our alliance has completed the five-year term thrice. NDA is not a gathering to run the government, it is a group formed with the basic spirit of nation first. The tree which was nurtured by countless leaders like Prakash Singh Badal, Bala Saheb Thackeray, George Fernandes has become a banyan tree.
Modi focused on good governance in the next ten years. He focused on everyone’s efforts. Modi said that for him all the party members in the House are equal. There is no distinction between ours and theirs. We have left no stone unturned in embracing everyone. Modi mentioned the good performance of NDA in tribal and Christian dominated areas. Modi’s special focus was on the increased vote share in Tamil Nadu. According to Modi, the picture of the future is hidden in this. Referring to the attacks on people associated with the Sangh in Kerala, Modi said – We never won there but today for the first time our member is sitting in the Parliament.
It is clear that Modi himself was focusing on governance. Not a single emotional issue was mentioned. In such a situation, it is important to mention what Eknath Shinde said. He said that the NDA will remain united like Fevicol. But, there is a rift among the parties in Maharashtra itself for the defeat on many seats. How difficult it is to remain united at the Centre will be known in the future.
