Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of Britain.
London: Making his first major election announcement, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would introduce a “bold new” form of compulsory national service for young people if the Conservative Party wins the July 4 election. Indian-origin leader Sunak said his plan would give 18-year-olds the option of full-time military service for 12 months or volunteer service for one weekend a month for a year.
Military recruitment will be selective, with tests to determine eligibility, and could include serving in the armed forces or cyber defence. “We have a lot to be proud of in Britain but one of the problems in our society is that we have generations of young people who don’t have the opportunities they deserve,” Sunak said in a promotional video for his party to make the announcement.
We will present models for children up to 18 years of age
PM Rishi Sunak said, “Britain today faces a future that is more dangerous and more divided. There is no doubt how democratic values are under threat. That is why we will introduce a bold new model of national service for 18-year-olds, who can either spend 12 months in a competitive full-time military commission or spend one weekend per month volunteering in various roles within the community, such as delivering food to the disabled or serving in search and rescue.” Sunak said that this will help the youth gain valuable skills, make Britain more secure and build a strong national culture.
