The Waqf Amendment Bill will be introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The bill will be introduced in the House at 12 noon after the Question Hour. The Speaker has allocated 8 hours to discuss the matter. Out of this, 4 hours 40 minutes have been given to the government. The opposition still has the remaining time. Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JDU have announced supporting the bill. Both parties have issued whip to all MPs to be present in the House. On the other hand, the opposition is opposing this bill.
Which parties are protesting?
All opposition parties are opposing this bill. This includes Congress, SP, RJD, TMC, DMK, Left Dal, AIADMK, BRS, BJD and Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM. The total number of MPs of these parties is 234. The second question is whether the entire opposition will oppose the bill if voting takes place? This will also be worth seeing. There are reports that some opposition parties who are neutral may be absent from Rajya Sabha during voting. In such a situation, the government will not have any difficulty in passing the bill.

There are a total of 543 MPs in the Lok Sabha. Support of 272 MPs is required for the majority. The NDA currently has 294 MPs. While the India alliance has 234 MPs. In such a situation, if voting is held, the government can easily pass the bill in the Lok Sabha. The number of members in the Rajya Sabha is 245. There are currently 236 MPs. In such a situation, the government has the support of 121 members. Of these, 115 MPs are from NDA while 6 MPs are nominated members. BJP has 96 MPs in it. Apart from this, JDU has 4 MPs from TDP 2 and other small parties. The government needs the support of 119 MPs in the Rajya Sabha to pass this bill. Which is two more than the majority.
The JPC report was submitted on 13 March.
The bill was earlier placed before the cabinet on 19 February. Which was introduced in Parliament after getting approval. But the bill was sent to JPC on the demand of the opposition. On 13 March, JPC presented a 655 -page report on the bill in Parliament. At the same time, JDU and TDP had given three suggestions to the government which the government had accepted. It states that the law should not be implemented with the retrospective effect. This includes provision of tampering with old mosques, dargahs and religious places and taking the opinion of states in land related matters.
