Between 2009 and 2024, the number of parties contesting elections has more than doubled.
New Delhi: Analysis by the election rights organization ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR) shows that the number of political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections has increased by 104 percent between 2009 and 2024. According to the analysis, 751 political parties are in the electoral arena in 2024, while 766 parties contested in 2019, 464 in 2014 and 368 in 2009. There has been a massive increase of 104 percent in the number of political parties contesting elections between 2009 and 2024. ADR and ‘National Election Watch’ have done a comprehensive analysis of the affidavits of 8,337 candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections this time.
1333 candidates of national parties are in the electoral fray
Of the total 8,360 candidates contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 1,333 are from national parties, 532 from state-level parties, 2,580 from registered unrecognised parties and 3,915 are contesting as independent candidates. The analysis also provided information on criminal cases registered against the candidates. Out of 1333 candidates of national parties, 443 have reported criminal cases registered against them, while 295 candidates are accused in serious criminal cases. Out of 532 candidates of state-level parties, 249 have criminal cases registered against them, while 169 candidates are accused in serious criminal cases.
906 candidates of national parties are crorepatis
Out of 2,580 candidates from registered unrecognised parties, 401 have criminal cases registered against them and 316 are facing serious criminal cases. Besides, out of 3,915 candidates, 550 have criminal cases registered against them and 411 are facing serious charges. The analysis also revealed that out of all 8,337 candidates, 2,572 are crorepatis. 906 out of 1,333 candidates from national parties, 421 out of 532 candidates from state-level parties, 572 out of 2,580 candidates from registered unrecognised parties and 673 out of 3,915 independent candidates are crorepatis.
