It is being claimed in the report that sending a red heart emoji on WhatsApp in Saudi Arabia can lead to a fine of 100,000 Saudi Riyal i.e. about 20 lakh rupees. This fine can also be accompanied by a prison sentence of two to five years.
A report in Gulf News claimed that Al Moataz Qutbi, a member of the Anti-Fraud Association of Saudi Arabia, has said in a statement that sending a red heart emoji on WhatsApp means harassment. He further said that some pictures and emojis during online chats can turn into an offense of harassment, though action will be taken against someone only if someone files a lawsuit against him.
Kutbi has also issued a release warning people in this regard, in which special instructions have been given regarding the red heart emoji. According to Kutbi, harassment can be seen as every statement, act or gesture by any person with a sexual relationship towards another person who touches his or her body or intends to do so. It also includes emoji. Apart from the red heart emoji, the red rose emoji can also get you in trouble.
