Hyderabad-based vaccine maker Bharat Biotech on Friday announced that it will temporarily reduce the production of the COVID vaccine at all its manufacturing plants. “Bharat Biotech has announced a temporary reduction in the production of Covaccine at its manufacturing facilities to meet supply obligations to procurement agencies and to address demand constraints,” the statement said.
The company will focus on pending facility maintenance, process and facility optimization activities for the coming period.
He said that since all the existing facilities for manufacturing the covaccine with continuous production were rebuilt during the last one year to meet the public health emergency of COVID-19, these upgrades were due. It added that some of the equipment which was required to increase the rigor of the process was not available during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bharat Biotech said, “During the recent WHO EUL inspection, Bharat Biotech agreed with the WHO team on the scope of the planned improvement activities and indicated that they would be implemented at the earliest.”
It also said that it is working on further improvements and upgrades to ensure that covaccine production continues to meet ever-increasing global regulatory requirements.
