Electricity KYC(Know Your Customer) Taking action against fraud, the Department of Telecommunications has directed the blocking of 392 mobile phones used in cyber crime and financial frauds across the country on the basis of IMEI. According to an official statement, the Department of Telecommunications has initiated the process of blocking these phones keeping in mind the safety of the people in response to reports of fraudulent activities involving mobile numbers in the scam related to updating electricity KYC. Victims had reported some cases of their phones being manipulated and taken under control using SMS and WhatsApp messages related to updating electricity KYC and malicious APK files.
‘Chakshu’ portal was used
The Department of Telecommunications used the ‘Chakshu’ portal for reporting and analyzing fraudulent activities, which initially identified five suspicious numbers. According to the statement, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) based analysis of this portal revealed that 392 handsets associated with 31,740 mobile numbers were used in these fraudulent activities. The department has directed all telecom service providers to block these handsets across the country on the basis of IMEI. ”
31,740 mobile connections under scrutiny
Along with this, the Department of Telecommunications has also directed telecommunication companies to re-verify 31,740 mobile connections connected to these mobile handsets. If these numbers are found to be wrong in the re-verification, they will be immediately cancelled and the concerned handset will also be blocked. The department has also appealed to alert and vigilant citizens to report suspicious fraudulent communications through the ‘Chakshu – Report Suspicious Fraudulent Communication’ facility on the ‘Sanchar Sathi’ portal.
