Veteran tennis player Rohan Bopanna is among the seven players who will receive the Padma Shri award, India’s fourth highest civilian honour, on January 26, 2024. The Home Ministry on Thursday released the list of Padma Awards 2024 winners, which includes 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri awardees. Bopanna made India proud by winning its first gold in mixed doubles with Rutuja Bhosale at the 2023 Asian Games and also reached the finals of three Grand Slam tournaments last year.

The 43-year-old Bopanna on Wednesday became the new world No. 1 in the ATP mixed rankings and the fourth Indian tennis player to top the ATP/WTA standings. Bopanna has also reached the final of the ongoing Australian Open 2024 in men’s doubles and is just one step away from his second Grand Slam title on Saturday. Even at this age, Bopanna is continuously performing well for India.
India’s veteran squash player Joshna Chinappa is also set to receive the Padma Shri after winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Asiad in Hangzhou. Chinappa, 37, won the World Championship title in doubles in 2022 and Commonwealth gold in 2014. Veteran Mallakhamba coach Uday Vishwanath Deshpande is also set to receive the prestigious civic award following Maharashtra’s record-breaking performance at the National Games 2023 in Goa.
