A mega auction is to be held before IPL 2025 and before that all the franchises will retain and release the players. Now all the franchises involved in the league have given their opinion on many matters in the feedback session before the mega auction. These include organizing a mega auction every five years, teams getting a chance to retain four to six players. All the franchises have demanded the option of eight Right to Match (RTM) cards. Now a decision on these 3 demands can be taken in the meeting to be held next week.

Demanded to extend the period of mega auction

According to ESPNcricinfo report, a senior official of IPL franchise said that there are advantages of holding mega auction every five years instead of every three years in IPL. This will give franchises time to prepare young players, especially uncapped players. On the other hand, the franchises which are part of the tournament from the first season, have invested a lot in finding young players and have built cricket academies. By having mega auction every three years, there is a danger that the player they have prepared will be taken away from their team in the mega auction. If the mega auction is held every five years, then the teams will have the opportunity to keep the players with them for a longer time and they will be able to form their core team.

There have been two instances in the last decade when the IPL mega auction has taken place after four years. The first time this happened was in 2017, that year the mega auction was held for the first time since 2014 because then the teams of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned for two years (2016 and 2017). Due to the Corona epidemic, the next mega auction was held in 2021. On both occasions, the franchises had the facility to extend the contract of their players for one year.

The RTM option has already been used

According to ESPNcricinfo’s report, on the suggestion of Right to Match option, the CEO of an IPL franchise said that it should allow the team to retain a big player and apart from this, other players should be allowed to be included as RTM. When the released players go to the mega auction, their price will be decided according to the auction. This rule has been used before as well. Then the teams were given the option to retain five players. After this, the franchise was able to get back 3 players in the mega auction through RTM. Teams can buy the player at the same price at which the last bid was placed on them in the mega auction.
