United Nations: The US and its key European allies have opposed Iran and Russia over Tehran’s growing nuclear programme at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The US vowed to “use all means necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons”. The US, France, Britain and Germany accused Iran of continuing to pursue its nuclear activities and failing to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency. Iran and Russia have accused the US and its allies of imposing economic sanctions. Both countries stressed that Tehran’s nuclear programme is under the constant monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Who is the conflict between?
The confrontation took place during a semi-annual meeting between Iran and six major countries – the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany – on the implementation of the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Under the deal, Tehran had agreed to limit uranium enrichment to the level necessary for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. In 2018, then-President Donald Trump withdrew the US from the deal, saying he would seek a tougher deal, but that did not happen.
what is the situation in iran
The council meeting came after the IAEA reported in late May that Iran had more than 142 kilograms (313 pounds) of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, far short of making weapons-grade levels of 90 percent. This was an increase of more than 20 kilograms (45 pounds) since February, the IAEA said. The IAEA also reported on June 13 that its inspectors had verified that Iran had started up new cascades of advanced centrifuges that enrich uranium more rapidly and planned to do so more rapidly.
What does America want
US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood told the council that the IAEA report “shows that Iran is determined to expand its nuclear program in ways that have no credible civilian purpose.” Wood said the US is prepared to use all means to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed country. He also said, however, that his country remains “fully committed to resolving international concerns about Iran’s nuclear program through diplomacy.”
These three countries issued a joint statement
The three Western countries still party to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program – France, Germany and Britain – issued a joint statement after the council meeting, saying the door was also open for diplomatic efforts “to ensure that Iran never develops nuclear weapons.” They said Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium is now 30 times the limit set by the JCPOA. They stressed that Iran has committed under the JCPOA not to install or operate any centrifuges for enrichment. (AP)
